Install CyanogenMod-7 from scratch

Page history last edited by frauhottelmann 12 years, 8 months ago

To install CM7 on a Samsung Galaxy S there are some prerequisites needed:

Disclaimer

As always, if something goes wrong nobody except you can be held responsible for your damage!

Prerequisites:

  • (obsolete but still recomended from nightly #77) Make sure you're running a Eclair/Froyo Firmware (2.1 or 2.2) and Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders!
--> Bootloaders + Froyo + Speedmod: http://sourceforge.net/projects/team...A.tar/download (flash this with Odin)
if you run a Gingerbread build by Samsung you need to flash this because Gingerbread bootloaders are not compatible with CM7 yet.
  • SpeedMod Kernel for Root and ClockworkMod Recovery (not needed separately if you flash the package from above)
  • Latest CM7-SGS build from here on your internal SDCard
  • Latest Gapps from here on your internal SDCard (optional)

The Flashing:

  1. (obsolete but still recomended from nightly #77) Flash the provided froyo firmware with Odin (or Heimdall if you are on Linux/Mac OS X)
  2. Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery using 3BC ([vol up] + [home] + [power])
  3. Do a Nandroid backup (only if you didn't flash the provided Froyo package)
  4. Install CM7 from SDCard
  5. Install Gapps from SDCard (optional)

now boot into CM7 for the first time, dont be worried, this will take a while since the Dalvik cache needs to be built up.

maybe we should update on these? i mean we could still present both ways of doing, but we need to consider current bootloader situation. we could change prerequisites to:
- Make sure you have CWM installed and root access.
- Latest CM7-SGS build from here on your internal SDCard
- Latest Gapps from here on your internal SDCard (optional)

The Flashing:
- Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery using 3BC ([vol up] + [home] + [power])
- Do a Nandroid backup
- Install CM7 from SDCard
- Install Gapps from SDCard (optional)

what do you guys think? or something in those lines.

As long as the CM7 devs recommend Froyo bootloaders (which won't change until other Galaxy S devices get the GB bootloaders too) it should stay there...

yes, of course, please excuse my learnt-from-the-movie-subtitles-english. :P i also meant that it should be explained as well that there's 2 usable types of bootloaders. maybe then make a observation to already existing 'flashing bootloaders' howto, and update that as well.

Yes, that would be an option :)
