There are three different basic styles for flashing a CM7 Nightly:

  • As quick and easy as possible, aka The Daredevil
  • As carefully and throughly as possible, aka The Responsible Pedestrian
  • Something in between, aka The Average Joe

In this How-To I will briefly outline the steps for each of the three styles...

The Daredevil

The Daredevil wants to flash the nightly as fast as possible, with the least interaction required. Most of the time, this will work just fine. If for whatever reason this method goes wrong and causes bootloops, lost apps, FCs or male pattern baldness...you can always go back and reflash using one of the other methods.

  1. Open ROM Manager (paid version)
  2. Go to Download ROM > CyanogenMod Nightlies
  3. Select the latest Nightly
  4. Opt to install Google Apps with it when prompted (optional as of Nightly 40).
  5. Select Wipe Dalvik Cache when prompted.
  6. Let 'er rip.

The Average Joe

This method takes a little more time then the Daredevil, but still cuts a lot of corners. Again, 99 percent of the time this method will work just fine. When it doesn't, reflash.

  1. Download the Nightly you wish and your Gapps zip of choice (see download locations in the Sidebar) and place them on your internal SD card.
  2. Boot into Recovery.
  3. Wipe the Dalvik Cache
  4. Wipe the Cache
  5. Using Flash Zip from SD flash the Nightly you downloaded.
  6. Using Flash Zip from SD flash the Gapps zip you downloaded.
  7. Fix Permissions.
  8. Reboot...TADAH (though remember that after the wiping the first boot will take up to 10 minutes).

The  Responsible Pedestrian

This method dots every i, crosses every t, makes sure every seat belt is secured and will tell strangers they should be more careful while handling knives around pets. It will also cross the street to tell you that you are holding that baby incorrectly. If you run into bootloops after using THIS method, then you got serious problems, poindexter.

  1. Download the Nightly you wish and your Gapps zip of choice (see download locations in the Sidebar) and place them on your internal SD card.
  2. Download the Will MIUI&CM7 Cleaner script from http://www.multiupload.com/0XAZSDSU9F and remember to thank lippol94 & WiwiPouPou for it after placing it on your internal SD card.
  3. Boot into Recovery.
  4. Run a Nandroid backup, just in case.
  5. Wipe the Dalvik Cache
  6. Wipe the Cache
  7. Go into Storage and Mounts and format the /system directory (this will not delete your user data or apps).
  8. Using Flash Zip from SD flash Will MIUI&CM7 Cleaner which you downloaded.
  9. Using Flash Zip from SD flash the Nightly you downloaded.
  10. Using Flash Zip from SD flash the Gapps zip you downloaded.
  11. Fix Permissions.
  12. Reboot...Thank GOD, you made it in one piece! (though remember that after the wiping the first boot will take up to 10 minutes).

General Note

Remember, there is NO NEED to wipe the /data or /datadata directories while flashing a Nightly unless you run into VERY SERIOUS problems and have exhausted all other avenues of relief.
